Far Cry 2 with Dylan's Realism Mod (Unfinished)
Frank Bilders has seen all the worst things humanity has to offer, and when he looks at himself he doesn't see much different. He's lead a life that no one appreciates, least of all himself. But there is something he can do to make it all worth something - one little gesture to make good use of all the violent skills he's built over a life of international crime and war.

He can kill the infamous arms dealer, The Jackal. And if he dies trying, that's just as good.

Frank's Penance uses a huge original backstory to give the wordless in-game character a reason for every shot fired. The story is told like an audiobook during the traveling sections of the game, chronicling Frank's journey from listless teenager to unstoppable veteran mercenary.

This series was an early attempt to not become a Total War channel. Clearly it didn't work! But this style of series is what I'd like to do in other games too, such as Skyrim.

The actual story being told is planned out from start to finish, and about half written. In the series only about 25% of it actually got told - I realised the story was far too long to actually fit into the videos before the game ended! That was part of the reason I actually stopped making the series, the other reason being that people were more interested in Total War videos.

In the game the character is actually called Frank Bilder, while I call him Frank Bilders. That's because Frank is actually one of the very few character that actually has a canon backstory endorsed by Ubisoft. So my character is someone else I guess!

I made a full episode of this series long before anything was released, in which I attempted to do a kind of first-person running stream of consciousness commentary, but it was too far and too much improv! So I remade it, using the regular gameplay commentary with scripted narrative in between, much easier and probably better anyway.

I recall having big technical problems with this series, as the mod I was using made shadows far too dark inside on my hardware. I ended up tweaking values in the game files myself to get a look that was both dark and moody and still somewhat visible, especially after video capture, a process that generally reduces the brightness of the footage from the source.

Frank is very much inspired by Max Payne, especially in his sharp and self-depreciating tone as he tells his story.

Maybe I'll finish writing the actual story and edit it into a book one day. One glorious day...
